Leila from Kirkby has been honoured at this year’s Knowsley Education Awards for her outstanding achievement and determination in the face of personal adversity.

Our Painting and Decorating apprentice received the Post-16 Merit Award at the Knowsley Education Awards, held at the Shakespeare North Playhouse in June.

The award recognises students and apprentices who have achieved exceptional outcomes or demonstrated resilience that deserves to be celebrated by their education providers.

Leila’s journey has been far from easy. While studying, she also took on the care of vulnerable family members, yet still achieved a distinction in her studies and secured an apprenticeship with Livv Housing, which has since led to full-time employment.

Leila was supported by tutor, Ste Hardman and assessor, Donna Moss, and was nominated by Clare Webster, Director of Apprenticeships, and Marie Sephton, Head of Apprenticeships at St Helens College, who said

“She distance Leila has travelled in her learning journey is truly inspirational,” said Clare. “She faced more challenges than most but refused to give up. She’s not only achieved personally—she now gives back by mentoring others. We’re so proud of her”

College Deputy Principal, Mohammed Ramzan, praised Leila’s accomplishments:

“Leila’s resilience and commitment are outstanding. Her triple distinction in her end-point assessment and her personal growth are a credit to her and the College.”

The awards event was attended by students, educators, local businesses, and community leaders, and opened by Cllr David Lonergan, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, and Mayor of Knowsley, Cllr Ken McGlashan.
