Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery

This course will introduce you to the carpentry and joinery work environment within the construction industry.

During the course, you will learn how to use hand tools as well as portable power tools as you master the art of creating woodworking joints, frames, doors and windows. You will also learn about components and materials, including how to unload and store timber and sheet materials.

More information

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete. You will attend College one evening per week, on Tuesday from 6.00pm – 9.00pm.

The course takes place at our STEM Centre, Technology Campus, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

During this course, you will cover the following:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Producing woodworking joints

During this course, you’ll be assessed by a range of practical and theory assessments.

You do not need any formal qualifications, just passion and a commitment to your studies.

The course fee is £362. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages.

This course is the first step towards launching a career as a successful Carpenter. You could progress on to Level 2 Joinery to enhance your skills and knowledge or alternatively, you could secure an apprenticeship to gain on-the-job skills and experience.
