Ambitious Level 3 Applied Science students are stepping into the fast-paced world of life sciences, gaining hands-on experience to prepare them for impactful careers in medical innovation.

Delivered in partnership with global surgical simulation leader Inovus Medical, the initiative forms part of LCR Ignite, a programme within the Liverpool City Region’s Life Sciences Investment Zone – an ambitious project set to create 8,000 new jobs and attract £800 million in investment over the next decade.

From Classroom to Cutting-Edge Industry

Over the next four months, the students will take part in eleven immersive weekly employability sessions, working alongside industry professionals to tackle real-world challenges and develop essential skills – from communication and teamwork to technical problem-solving.

Students Amelia , Athena , Reuben and Hasan are already relishing the experience.

Amelia said:

“It’s incredible to see the range of work they do. They create prosthetic body parts and silicone organs for medical students to practise on – it’s great to experience their innovation first-hand.”

Reuben added:

“Last week we got to use virtual surgery equipment. We simulated an internal operation using instruments to move objects on screen. It was more difficult than it looked, but I learned that I could stay calm and focus on intricate tasks.”

Athena shared:

“The staff are so professional and friendly. They explain everything so clearly and show how science works in a real workplace. This experience has boosted my confidence – especially when speaking in public.”

Hasan agreed:

“It’s so beneficial. We’re gaining practical science skills and a real taste of what a career in this industry could look like.”

Each student will specialise in one of four pathways, aligned with real projects at Inovus Medical: Med-Tech Manufacturing, Brand and Business, Software Development and Engineering, and Med-Tech Innovation.

Real Impact, Real Opportunity

Simon Pierce, Principal and CEO of St Helens College, said:

“We are proud to be part of this transformative initiative. These students represent the first wave of St Helens College students taking this opportunity and stepping into a sector that’s vital to both regional growth and global health innovation.”

He added: “LCR Ignite gives them the chance to work alongside industry leaders and build the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to thrive in the life sciences sector.”
