Forget about the Champions League…this season it has been all about the staff and students battling to be crowned Football Champions of our Colleges.
The student team, made up of current sports students, took on our staff, which included tutors and members of our SLT. Both teams came out firing on all cylinders, with tackles flying in and the occasional foul, completely missed by the referee, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Against the run of play, KCC student Andrew found himself in a fortunate position and rifled a shot towards the far post from a tight angle, with the ball bouncing into the goal. Celebrations in the corner from the students gave the staff the inspiration to turn things around as they headed towards half-time.
As both teams emerged for the second half, the staff had something to prove. They soon took control of the game and, after some impressive footwork, the ball fell nicely to Dan Young, who rolled it into the far corner from outside the box to bring the scores level. This gave the staff the confidence boost they needed and, after some well-worked passing play, the ball landed kindly for staff member Gary Jones from a delightful Neil Wood cross, which he buried to make it 2-1 to the staff.
Fired up, the students responded and Alex restored hope after waltzing his way through the middle of the park, calmly slotting the ball away to make it 2-2.
It was all to play for as both teams dug deep with the final whistle fast approaching. The hammer blow came for the students with around 15 minutes to play, when tutor Stephen Wynne showed off his skills and breezed past defenders, with the ball ending up at Dan Young’s feet on the edge of the box. The ball was drilled low and hard towards the back post and, with two strikers closing in on what would have been a simple tap-in, it was deflected into the Sports students’ goal by a defender to make it 3-2 to the staff.
As soon as the final whistle went, it was the staff celebrating. However, although hands were shaken, we do not think this will be the end, with our students already wanting a rematch.
